WOODS HOLE SCIENCE AQUARIUM
This aquarium is the oldest aquarium
in the country and the second oldest
in the world. In 1875, Woods Hole
introduced the first fish tanks open
to the public for viewing. The current
site began as an aquarium in 1885.
The Woods Hole Science Aquarium
displays approximately 140 species
of marine animals found in Northeast
and Middle-Atlantic US waters. Visitors
can see information about Woods Hole
science and history, fishery science,
marine mammals, sea turtles, and local
42
fish species. Along with 20 tanks,
there are more than a dozen aquaria,
two touch tanks where children can
encounter marine life and a behindthe-scenes area where visitors can
talk with staff as they go about daily
tasks of caring for the animals. The
aquarium is owned by the federal
government and run by NOAA
Fisheries. Admission is free.

WOODS HOLE HISTORICAL
MUSEUM
The Woods Hole Historical
Collection was founded in 1973 as
a subcommittee of the Woods Hole
Library. In 1976, it moved into its
own building, Bradley House, next
door to the library. By 1995-96, two
more buildings were moved to the
site—the Yale Work shop and the
Swift Barn (which houses the Small
Boat Museum)—and the name of
the organization was changed to the
Woods Hole Historical Museum. The
museum galleries and buildings are
open from mid-June to mid-October.

INSTITUTION
WHOI’s mission is dedicated to
research and higher education at the
frontiers of ocean science. Its primary
mission is to develop and effectively
communicate a fundamental
understanding of the processes
and characteristics governing how
the oceans function and how they
interact with the Earth as a whole.
Take advantage of its free public
lectures and films. Weekly listings of
